TREA Superintendent Mentor ProgramTREA currently has over 70 experienced superintendents who serve as Mentors to individuals new to the superintendency. These Superintendent Mentors are in 17 of the 20 Education Service Center regions. We will continue to expand the number of Mentors across all areas of the state. The State Board for Educator Certification rule 19 TAC Section 242.25 requires that: (a) First-time superintendents (including the first time in the state) shall participate in a one-year mentorship which should include at least 36 hours of professional development directly related to the standards identified in 19 TAC section 242.15. (b) During the one-year mentorship, the superintendent should have contact with his or her mentor at least once a month. The mentorship program must be completed within the first 18 months of employment in the superintendency in order to maintain the standard certificate. (c) Experienced superintendents willing to serve as mentors must participate in training for the role.TREA recommends at least three years of successful superintendent experience before attending the required Mentor Training. TREA also recommends that as many of the contacts as possible be in person rather than by phone or e-mail. Such personal contacts may occur in conjunction with statewide or regional meetings. TREA along with other Texas professional educator organizations provide periodic training opportunities to superintendents interested in serving as mentors. Whether you are a new superintendent that needs a Mentor, or you are an experienced superintendent interested in becoming a Mentor, feel free to reach out to us.
